I have been meeting with the Social Studies Curriculum Committee for the past two days. I am amazed at the level of professionalism and collegiality that I saw. OKCPS is on its way to having the quality curriculum that our students deserve. One thing that was discussed with middle school and high school committees was the idea of using some common language in our classrooms and common tools used across the district.
We looked at SOAPPSTone or APPARTS for document analysis and GPERSIA vs. GRAPES to summarize regions. The committee noticed a lack of formalized strategy for interpreting maps, charts and graphs. OPTICS can be used, but we came up with a great strategy that we called "QTIPS"
Q- read the Question
T- what is the Title of the visual
I- what Information is present- legend, captions, etc.
P- use Prior knowledge of the subject
S- Summarize the findings and answer the question.
I think that this provides a good tool for us to use with our students to walk them through these visuals.
